About QuickBooks Payroll
QuickBooks Payroll is a payroll management platform for small businesses that provides businesses with complete control over their employee salary calculations and labor hours. The payroll solution incorporates an internal calculator which automatically assesses tax returns based on the amount of employee hours entered.
QuickBooks Payroll lets users enter the salaries and hours of employees, then allocates staff wages to their linked accounts. Full tax reports can also be viewed and return payments are automatically calculated and can be processed within a matter of seconds. Tax returns can be managed based on geographical location to abide by state employment laws.
All data entered into QuickBooks Payroll is completely transparent and users can view real-time reports which can be exported to Excel spreadsheets. The complete backend dashboard is optimised for mobile devices giving users the ability to control payroll operations whilst out of office. Once logged in, QuickBooks Payroll lets users add, edit and execute payment tasks, and generates notifications for important updates.
Key benefits of QuickBooks Payroll
• QuickBooks Payroll fully automates tax calculations for employee paychecks, and monitors local, state, and federal taxes for updates.
• The online employee portal allows employees to view their W-2s and pay stubs at any time.
• Self-service payroll lets users prepare and file their own tax forms, and QuickBooks Payroll also offers a full service option which provides US-based support for state and federal forms and payments.
• Payroll can be run as many times as required with no extra fees, and users can create additional checks and bonuses outside of regularly scheduled payroll.
• Native iOS and Android mobile apps allow users to create paychecks, electronically pay taxes and file forms, pay workers, receive reminders, view paycheck histories, and more from anywhere.

Great software
Reviewed on 15/08/2025
Pros
Quickbooks is a very user friendly software that allows our small company to be able to organize payroll and even have volunteers help with.
Cons
Though also could be considered a pro, the software has frequent updates, and so requires constant updates to processes and procedures.

The experience has been good and the ease of use and the low cost makes it a great software for the beginner or the advanced user.
Pros
QuickBooks offers an easy to use payroll software that does not cost a fortune and is very easy to set up and use.
Cons
I have no complaints at this time as everything suits our needs and handles what we need to get accomplished.

So far it's decent. We had an employee to put the wrong bank info in for direct deposit and QBP is not quick to correct the debit from my account. I had to write a check and now i have 2 debited payrolls for the employee, 7 days later no refund showing yet despite assurance it will refund soon. I will follow up.
Pros
Easy to view employees, their hours, set job expectations, easy to setup employees when hired on. Easy to fix issues if they arise.
Cons
The cost is rising and we barely need all the services provided. There should be a la cart options for building our own package of services needed vs jumping to the next substantial cost increase.

I use QBO Payroll to run payroll for clients, and overall it makes the process smooth. Everything stays clean in the file, and it saves me time. It’s not the cheapest option, but the integration and ease of use make it worth it for me.
Pros
I like that it’s already inside QuickBooks, so I don’t have to deal with extra syncing or posting journal entries. The setup is simple, and it’s easy to set up different pay types for different clients. Workforce is also a plus - clients’ employees can log in and get their own paystubs and info without me being the middle person.
Cons
It does cost more than some other payroll options. I’ve run into a couple of glitches here and there, but support has been good and got things sorted out pretty quickly.

Love it. As a small business owner that wears many hats, I will continue to use Quickbooks payroll for years to come!
Pros
Simple - easy to add hours, change RoP, vacations, and even integrated with our 401K. Also makes payroll tax payments for you!
Cons
Does not keep track of changes. For instance when someone gets a new RoP or added benefit, I cannot go back and look up their previous info easily.
