Great way to learn the basics of a new language

Reviewed on 01/04/2024

Pros

There's a great variety of languages available and I like that it offers a placement test if you're already a bit familiar with the language

Cons

Because I'm living in countries where I'm also learning the languages on Duolingo, I'm learning at a faster rate than the application and I find I eventually get bored at the level it put me at in the beginning as I've surpassed it with real-life learning and development. So I end up stop using the app. Would love to be offered a level placement reassessment for such cases.

The best language learning app so far

Reviewed on 08/06/2024

Pros

It is a learning app that offers everything, from an entertaining and interactive way to learn a new language, certification programs, courses for new learners, advanced learners, or children, and a great variety of languages. To spur your language development they set up ranking lists, you can also view your progress.

Cons

The only drawback I found so far is the limited grammar lessons. For each lesson, the grammar explanation although they are well-written, only scratches the surface, they don't get into details.

I've had enough of it, I'm off to find an app that can do translation and learning of Frrnchbto English properly.

Pros

Very little, too annoying with all its mistakes to put up with any longer. And saw no benefits to the app in giving feedback, as it was never improved.

Cons

Couldn't get French French to English English translation, just sloppy american English, which is so very annoying.

Overall, it's positive. I'm forced to learn.

Pros

I like (but also hate at the same time) the fact that they have a learning streak... I'm currently on 1488 days.

Cons

I hate that I'm forced to study at least every two days (with a learning streak freeze used). I don't know what I'd do I it went down to 0 days! I know it's good for me to study everyday but I mean come on, like I said, yu can't have two days off.

The only app that managed to keep me coming back to study a language. Very good at making me to open the app every day.

Pros

Very good at reminding and motivating me to do another class to extend my streak. Duolingo's ability to engage users must be studied as a great business case.

Cons

Some of their icons when a Duolingo becomes ill. You can design better.

Duolingo is the best way to start learning a new language

Good at some extend considering that the app is free.

Pros

The interactive experience with users and the fairy tales is an element that makes Duolingo fun for children, teenagers and adults. You also have the possibility to participate in contests and find new friends with common interests in learning a new language.

Cons

It is not accurate with translations and feedback. As a person who speaks English fluently, I would say that I have found many mistakes specially when I was doing listening exercises. There are many times in which the audio does not work.

A bit frustrated as there are glitches and errors. Paying about of money I would expect more. They don’t focus on important things like verbs leaving you confused as you go further along.

Pros

Fun way to learn a new language. The challenges are fun but it is only fun if you pay. Otherwise it’s not enjoyable.

Cons

I was scammed into a free trial and they took my money out of my account before the trial was up. Duolingo would not reply and Apple would not refund.

The learning trails keep me hooked at every stage. I learn quickly, practically and with fun. I like it a lot.

Pros

An app that's like a language school. It's easy to learn, and it's fun, because the stages and the learning path keep you hooked on the app.

Cons

The cost could be a little lower, but I understand, because as I said, the learning is comparable to face-to-face schools. It's just as good. But because it's an app, it could be cheaper.

50/50. Great learning but dreadful marketing. Either make the whole program a paid subscription or split it for users to choose, but don’t harass them.

Pros

The lessons with listening, composing alternation

Cons

The unrelenting pressure to try Super Duolingo. It started with “no thanks” options, progressed to pop up ads with a loud voice that disrupted concentration, and finally a three day trial button from which, if you accidentally clicked, there was no way out. The program started with 14 lessons and was decreased to just 3. They were progressively putting more and more pressure to go to Super Duolingo. I did not like this experience.

Good attempt at learning, but non-existent customer service gives this program a 2 thumbs down.

Pros

Looks easy, and interface seems simple enough. Lower price than other language learning courses, screens are generally not too busy and very clean. Somewhat easy to get around and straight forward clicking on tabs makes it more easy to use.

Cons

No customer service, they do not reply to questions.

For example, I purchased a year with understanding I would not be required to purchase in-app tokens - this was not true, nor not mentioned before buying.

Furthermore, after a few sessions, I wanted to cancel, but found out once you pay, you cannot get your money back. You have to wait one year before that can happen. Because there is no communication, if you fall for the sales pitch, your done.
